Postgame: Devils Knock Off Flyers 6-4

game01 The first thought that comes to mind after the Devils 6-4 victory over the Flyers is “roller coaster ride.” With the Devils leading 3-0 through 35 minutes of play, it looked as if a victory in Philadelphia wasn’t going to be tough to get but then the Flyers started coming. By the end of the 2nd, it was 3-3 and when the Devils regained the lead 4-3 in the 3rd, the Flyers came right back. Eventually the Devils regained the lead and held on. It’s great that they scored 6 times but it certainly felt like that win should have been easier. The certainly thought they did a great job of regrouping and that’s an important thing to be able to do.

The Good

I like what Mike Cammalleri brings to this team and I thought he showed flashes of how valuable he will be this season. Ryder is a great sniper who scored a great goal as only a sniper can and contributed on Henrique’s goal. Ryder had 2 goals in his first 3 games last year and then cooled off for a bit. Hopefully he continues to score and contribute throughout the season. The Elias goal that gave the Devils a brief 4-3 lead was a thing of beauty. A great push up the ice to create a 4 on 3, followed up with great passing and great awareness by Zidlicky that Elias was all alone in front of the net. elias

And needless to say – 6 Goals For!!

The Bad

Simple blowing a 3-0 lead in 3 and half minutes to close out the 2nd period and then once the Devils regained the lead, they allowed Philadelphia to answer right back. You could argue this is just a typical Devils game under DBO but we learned in the playoffs last year that no team is safe with a lead, that all teams can and do make remarkable comebacks. The Devils took some bad penalties although I disagreed with the call on Tootoo in the 2nd. What helps teams did themselves out of 2-0 and 3-0 holes? Handing them needless power plays which is exactly what NJ did last night. Salvador was awful in my opinion. He looked slow, he watched guys blow past him  and he certainly shouldn’t be skating around the ice with a “C” on his chest.
